"I, Gualdim Pais…"


Gualdim Pais, master of the Order of the Temple, was founder of the castle and city of Tomar, responsible for building the Almourol Castle and the Tower of Dornes. Knighted by King Afonso Henriques, he became known as the 4th Grand Master of the Order of the Temple in Portugal. Get to know a little about this unavoidable figure in Templar history.

"White, Black and Red"


White, black and red are colors that symbolize the soul, body and blood. Aspiring members of the Order of the Temple were well aware of the rules created by Bernardo de Claraval, and followed them strictly in order to have the maximum honor of being ordained Templars.

"Isabel"


Isabel de Aragão, also known as Rainha Santa Isabel due to the well-known Miracle of the Roses, was the wife of King Dinis and witnessed the heyday and, in 1319, the extinction of the Order of the Temple. Get to know more about this important figure, to whom the villages of Abrantes and Ourém were donated.

"João de Castillo"


Considered the greatest architect in Portugal in the 16th century, João de Castilho was responsible for major works at the Convent of Christ which, after being the seat of the Knights of the Order of the Temple, was the seat of the Order of Christ. He also left his mark on other monuments, for example at Atalaia Mother Church, in Vila Nova da Barquinha, and at Areias Mother Church, in Ferreira do Zêzere.
