Conquest of the city of Santarém

On March 10, 1147, King Afonso Henriques left Coimbra, heading for Santarém, whose conquest was vital for the monarch's strategy: to end the frequent attacks on Coimbra and Leiria and, simultaneously, allow a future attack on Lisbon.

The objective was achieved on March 15, 1147, when Afonso Henriques and his army invaded the city in a night assault. Despite strong resistance, the Moors were eventually defeated. Santarém thus became part of the kingdom of Portugal.
