Donation of Sertã Castle

Located on a hill inside the village, whose occupation dates to the Islamic period, it is likely that its initial construction dates from the 10th century.

In 1165, D. Afonso Henriques donated this region to the Order of the Temple, bounded by the Tagus and Zêzere rivers, making it one of the strongholds of the defensive line raised by the Templars.

The Order's possession of Sertã lasted until 1174, when Sancho I, King of Portugal, transferred it to the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.
