Donation of the Ceras Castle

In 1147, after the conquest of Santarém, the king donated to the Order the churches of his term, belonging to the Lisbon diocese. After the conquest of the city and the appointment of the bishop, he claimed ownership for the diocese he led.

In 1159, with the aim of resolving the conflict between the Templars and the Lisbon Bishop, King Afonso Henriques reached an agreement between the two, which resulted in the renunciation of Santarém by the Temple, with the exception of the Santa Maria da Alcáçova Church, and the royal donation of Ceras, located between Coimbra and Santarém: a vast region of around 400 km2, whose geographical limits are very close to the current municipality of Tomar.
