Siege of Tomar

In 1190, Muslim troops advanced from the Algarve to the Tagus River, sacking castles and attacking villages. On the 13th of July, nine hundred Arab warriors, led by the caliph Abu Yusuf Ya'qub al Mansur, surrounded the Tomar Castle.

The siege lasted six days, with several attempts to conquer it. The Muslims even crossed the Almedina Door which, at that time, gave access to the population. According to legend, the confrontation was so violent that the Almedina Door became known as Blood Door. Finally, the Templars, commanded by Gualdim Pais, managed to defeat the Muslims.
