Tomar becomes the seat of the Order of Christ

In 1357, the headquarters of the Order of Christ was installed in the former Templar headquarters, the Tomar Castle, where it remains permanently. In 1834, it is one of the religious orders that disappears, but Maria II, decides to keep the Order of Christ as an Honorary Order.

The Order was brought to life in 1917 as the Military Order of Christ and presided over by the acting President of the Republic. It aims to distinguish “relevant services provided by nationals or foreigners to the country or humanity, both military and civilian”.
