São Vicente Church

The origin of the initial temple is not clear, but we know that it already existed before 1124, including from then a vast necropolis. In 1994-1995, several traces of the original temple were found here. The construction of the current building was ordered by King D. Sebastião in 1577. Throughout the ages, several architects, sculptors, and masons have worked in this church, namely Francisco Lopes, Pedro Antunes, Baltazar Marinho, Salvador Jorge, and Antão Gonçalves.

During your visit, make sure you see the various artistic items of Sacred Art, such as the stone altars, the tile panels covering the walls, the vaulted ceiling coffers, the carved altarpiece, and the Indo-Portuguese sculpture on the tribune.
