Estaus
The Estaus or Paços da Ribeira were built in the first half of the 15th century by Prince Henrique and served as medieval inns, with the purpose of receiving kingdom officials and nobles who traveled to Tomar, at the behest of the king, administrator of the Order of Christ.
Later, in the 16th century, they began to be used by tenants for housing and commerce, eventually coming under the jurisdiction of Misericórdia. Today, only two broken arches remain from the original structure. These architectural elements gave the name to the street “Rua dos Arcos” (Arches Street) and are another detail of historical interest that we can find when exploring the city of Tomar.
