Santa Maria do Olival Church
Rebuilt by Gualdim Pais in 1160, on the ruins of a Benedictine monastery of the primitive Santa Maria Church, the Santa Maria do Olival Church enjoys an excellent location, on the opposite side of the Convent, with a direct view over the Templar Castle. The connection to the Order of the Temple is strong, since it was chosen as the burial place of the master Gualdim Pais, becoming the pantheon of the Templar Masters.
The Gothic architecture that we can admire today is the result of 13th century reconstruction, during the reign of King Afonso III. Later, some Manueline, Mannerist and Mendicant Gothic features were added. Inside, pay attention to the stone sculpture of Our Lady of Leite and, outside, to the watchtower adapted as a belfry, from where it is possible to glimpse the Convent of Christ.
