Templar Interpretation Centre of Tomar
The Templar Interpretation Centre of Tomar, located in the heart of the town of Tomar, stands out, first of all, for being in the historic centre, for its proximity to the Nabão river, and for the stunning surrounding landscape. Located in the Cultural Complex of Levada de Tomar — a tourism and cultural facility that testifies and allows us to visit the centuries-old industrial development of the territory —, this facility asserts itself as a welcoming space for those wanting to start an adventure through history, heritage, and the traditions of Tomar.
This Centre — a facility everyone must visit and enjoy, either visitors or members of the community itself — is a unique place that interprets and communicates the history of Tomar, and of the Men and Women who worked to build this town over the ages. In a unique, continuous exhibition path, organized chronologically and moving seamlessly between topics that address the transformations of Tomar —starting in prehistory and in other ages representing the origins of this territory, then crossing the Roman, medieval, modern, and prospective periods —, the Templar Interpretation Centre of Tomar stands out, simultaneously, for its relationship with and presentation of the Order of the Temple.
The intention — with the circuit made available, with the designed narrative, as well as with the proposed sensorial and technological visit — is to open doors to local contemporaneity, and to make visitors reflect on territorial and community development. Actively articulated with the identity of the municipality of Tomar, and with the Route of the Templars — in an initiative developed in close connection with the Tourism of Portugal authority and with the Intermunicipal Community of the Médio Tejo —, this facility is the motto for affirming and driving the dynamics of the municipality in different national and international networks, as well as for developing and offering a set of combined activities around the Order of the Temple and the Order of Christ.
