Dornes Tower

In 1206, Pedro Afonso, son of King Afonso Henriques, donated the Dornes village to the Order of the Temple, and it is thought that the Dornes Tower was later built on a pre-existing structure. Also known as the Templar Tower, the Dornes Pentagonal Tower was erected by Gualdim Pais, master of the Order of the Temple and founder of the Tomar city. It is a tower for territory defense and domain was well for the control of the Zêzere river which, due to its historical and territorial context, is the greatest historical-military tourist attraction in Ferreira do Zêzere.

Transformed into a bell tower in the 16th century, it is a unique example of Romanesque military architecture, which is also worth seeing for its privileged location, on the magnificent peninsula of Dornes, bathed by the Zêzere river.
