Ourém Castle

It is at the top of the hill that rises above the village that we find Ourém Castle. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, by Princess Teresa (daughter of King Afonso Henriques), it was later subject to successive renovations, thus presenting Romanesque and Gothic military characteristics.

The designation Ourém appears for the first time in a donation document of Ceras to the Order of the Temple. Over the centuries, several historical personalities with leading roles in the History of Portugal stopped here, as it was the case when King Afonso Henriques donated it to his daughter Princess Teresa, and when D. Nuno Álvares Pereira was made count by D. João I.

Enjoy the natural beauty and go for a walk with privileged views over the village and taste Ginjinha d’Castelo de Ourém, a typical local liquor.
